Short answer: On many TOMIX models, switching to TN couplers is something TOMIX plans for: some locomotives come with a TN coupler in the box, and some models are described as “compatible with a dedicated TN coupler (SP), sold separately”. Before buying a part, check what your model’s product page says and which JC part TOMIX lists for it. Fitting TOMIX TN couplers to KATO models is not covered on either maker’s product pages.
Check 1: Is a TN coupler already in the box?
Several TOMIX locomotives come with a dummy coupler and an automatic TN coupler included, for example:
- DD51-500 (2245) and DD51-1000 (2246)
- EF81 “rose pink” (7121)
- EF210-100 new livery (7137) and EF210-300 “Momotaro” wrap (7138)
- ED75-0, early and late types (7139, 7140)
For these, you do not need to buy a part to try TN. TOMIX also sells spare TN couplers for them: JC6375 (EF81), JC6378 (EF210), and JC6379 (ED75), which TOMIX says can also be used on older products that came with TN couplers.
Check 2: Does the page say “TN coupler compatible”?
Some TOMIX product pages say the model is compatible with TN couplers, or with a dedicated TN coupler (SP) sold separately. Examples:
- Tarumi Railway Haimo 295-315 DMU (2617): dedicated TN coupler (SP), sold separately. TOMIX lists JC6360 for it.
- JR 225-5000 Series (92438, 92439) and 287 Series “Kounotori” (92855): compatible with body-mount TN couplers.
Check 3: Does the front end need a different skirt?
On some DMUs, the front skirt is shaped for one coupler type. TOMIX handles this by including a second skirt:
- KiHa 185 Series, JR Shikoku livery (98405) and “Around the Kyushu” (98454): a skirt for TN couplers is included.
- KiHa 183 Series “Tokachi” Set B (98693): the KiHa 182-100 comes with a skirt for the truck-mounted Arnold coupler. A better-looking skirt for TN couplers is included, but the TN coupler itself is sold separately. TOMIX lists JC6377 for this set.
If your model is like this, change the skirt as well as the coupler.
Check 4: Which TN part?
TN parts with the same name can be made for different models, so choose by product number. See How to find the right TN coupler for your TOMIX model, or search from our home page.
What about KATO models?
KATO’s product pages list KATO’s own coupler parts (KATO Coupler, knuckle couplers, and Magne-Matic couplers) as options. We did not find any KATO page that mentions TOMIX TN couplers. If you want to fit TN couplers to a KATO model, you are working outside both makers’ official listings. See KATO couplers explained for KATO’s own options.
