Body-Mount vs Truck-Mount Couplers on Japanese N Scale Models

Short answer: A truck-mount coupler is attached to the truck (bogie) and swings with it on curves. A body-mount coupler is attached to the car body, which allows a closer, more realistic gap between cars. Both KATO and TOMIX use both styles. TOMIX describes many of its TN couplers as body-mounted, and KATO’s product pages state the style for each model, so the answer depends on your exact model.

The difference

Truck-mount Body-mount
Where it is attached The truck (bogie) The car body or underframe
Gap between cars Usually wider Usually closer, more like the real train
Common examples Arnold couplers on coaches and freight cars; some KATO EMUs TOMIX TN couplers; KATO Couplers on many EMUs and DMUs

What TOMIX says

Several TOMIX product pages state body-mounted TN couplers directly. For example:

  • JR 225-5000 Series (92438, 92439) and JR 287 Series “Kounotori” (92855): described as compatible with body-mount TN couplers.
  • JR 321 Series 2nd batch (92358): body-mount TN coupler fitted on the cab end only.
  • JR 223-2000 Series (97631, 97632) and 521-100 Series (98133, 98134): the cab end uses a TN coupler (SP) with a smaller coupler carrier (胴受, dōuke).

For which TN part fits your model, see How to find the right TN coupler for your TOMIX model.

What KATO says

KATO’s product pages usually name the mounting style. In the coupler notes of 1,031 KATO N scale product pages (October 2026), about 255 mention body-mounted couplers and about 49 mention truck-mounted couplers. Examples:

  • Truck-mounted tight-lock couplers: 681 Series “Thunderbird” and “Shirasagi”, 787 Series “36+3”, and several 205 Series sets use truck-mounted tight-lock couplers between cars.
  • Truck-mounted Arnold couplers: the MaNi 50 and the 50 Series 2000 coaches (JR version) come with truck-mounted Arnold couplers.
  • Converting: for the 50 Series coaches, KATO says the separately sold telescopic coupler set (28-234) changes them to body-mount.
  • Mixed: on the “Karamatsu” overnight train set, the ends that couple to the locomotive use truck-mounted Arnold couplers and the rest use KATO Coupler JP B.

Which should I choose?

You usually do not choose the mounting style; the model decides it. What you can choose is the coupler part, and only where the maker lists an option for your model. Search your product number from our home page to see the listed parts.
