Short answer: Arnold (also called “rapido”) couplers are the traditional N scale coupler, and TOMIX still sells Arnold-type spare parts for some of its models. In TOMIX’s current parts lists, Arnold parts are used mainly on steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, and Taki 1000 tank cars. Several of those locomotives also have a TN coupler part listed, so you can often choose between the two.
Arnold vs TN in one paragraph
Most current TOMIX trains, especially EMUs, DMUs, and Shinkansen, use TN couplers that look like the real train’s coupler (see TOMIX TN couplers explained). Arnold couplers are the older, simpler hook-and-loop style used across N scale. They look less realistic but are robust and common on locomotives and freight cars.
TOMIX Arnold coupler parts with listed models
These five Arnold parts name the models they fit on their official TOMIX pages (checked October 2026).
| Part No. | Name | Listed models | MSRP (Japan, tax incl.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| JC6303 | Arnold coupler SL1 | C57 steam locomotive (2003, 2008) | ¥440 |
| JC6307 | Arnold coupler SL2 (with dummy coupler) | Moka Railway C11 steam locomotive (2643) | ¥440 |
| JC6308 | Arnold coupler C2 | Taki 1000 tank cars (8710, 8712, 8724) | ¥440 |
| JC6314 | Arnold coupler Mc2 (2 pcs) | DD51 diesel locomotives (2245, 2246) | ¥440 |
| JC6316 | Arnold coupler Mc (2 pcs) | Kinuura Rinkai Railway KE65 diesel locomotive (8706) | ¥330 |
The names are TOMIX’s own codes. “SL” parts are listed for steam locomotives, and “Mc” parts for diesel locomotives. TOMIX describes the two Mc parts as pre-assembled and able to uncouple automatically when used with its M rail. TOMIX says JC6316 is for the DE10 and DD13 as well as the listed KE65.
Models with both an Arnold and a TN part
For these models, TOMIX lists an Arnold part and a TN part:
- JR C57 steam locomotive No. 1 (2008): Arnold JC6303 and automatic TN JC6358
- Moka Railway C11 (2643): Arnold JC6307 and automatic TN JC6369
- DD51-500 (2245) and DD51-1000 (2246): Arnold JC6314 and automatic TN JC6385
If your train is mostly TN-equipped cars, the TN part lets the locomotive couple to them. If you run older cars or freight cars with Arnold couplers, the Arnold part keeps everything compatible. Check each model page on this site for the details.
